The South Norfolk Jordan Bridge (SNJB) is commemorating a decade of serving the community with an outdoor art installation selected through a contest. Once installed later this year, the winning entry will serve as a lasting gift that will beautify the area and uplift the traveling community for a long time to come. Construction is underway on this new 1.5-mile highway extension that will connect I-80 to CenterPoint Intermodal Center (CIC), one of the nation’s largest intermodal hubs. All seven bridge piers have been erected and shoring for the next phase has begun. This third entrance to the park will provide a more direct path for trucks to access I-80 and significantly slash the CIC’s carbon footprint. The Houbolt Road Extension is planned to open in the first quarter of 2023.

Bay City Bridge Partners has hired Bay City native Lynn M. Pavlawk as general manager of operations. She brings extensive leadership experience to her new position, and as general manager she will direct operations during the rehabilitation and modernization of Liberty Bridge, replacement of Independence Bridge, as well as all ongoing operations after construction.
Complete rehabilitation and modernization are currently in progress for the Liberty Bridge. All lanes are currently closed while repair work us underway until June/July, when the south lanes are expected to reopen. Liberty Bridge work is planned to be complete by the end of 2022.
Located a short distance upriver from Liberty is the Independence Bridge, with construction scheduled to commence Fall 2022. A new four-lane bridge with sidewalk will be built east of the existing bridge, which will remain in service until the new bridge is opened to traffic. This construction approach will allow traffic to flow throughout the construction process.

Full scale rehabilitation began on March 15 with a bridge closure expected to last 45 days. The closure will allow for a full examination of the bridge deck and steel superstructure to take place and for preliminary work to begin. Anticipated project completion is late 2023.
